Wallpaper Warning: Is Your Home a Hazard to Your Health?

A new study has revealed that your own four walls could be making you sick. According to Web MD, researchers have found that fungus growing on wallpaper can have a damaging effect on your well being, which results in something called “sick building syndrome.”

The study’s corresponding author Dr. Jean-Denis Bailly commented on the investigation. “We demonstrated that mycotoxins could be transferred from a mouldy material to air, under conditions that may be encountered in buildings,” she said.

The evidence suggests that those with homes prone to damp and fungus should look into the air quality of their living areas, as the released mycotoxins are unknowingly inhaled, and could be responsible for underlying health issues.

Dr. Bailly also stressed the impact energy-efficient homes could have upon the production of mycotoxins, as houses that are highly protected from the outside could promote the growth of various fungi.
