Hayfever vs. Holiday: 5 Anti-Allergy Items to Pack in Your Carry-On

Allergies can be troublesome at the best of times. By ‘the best of times,’ we mean when you’re able to deal with them in comfort - at home, eating a microwave meal for one with no one to fight with except the TV. However, your symptoms won't show up when it suits you.

Now that summer is here, you’re finally ready to sit down with a glass of wine and book that getaway you’ve been day dreaming about since that 9am meeting you had in March. So, before you type “as far away from the office as possible” into the destination box, relax. You don’t want your allergies getting one up on on you, especially when you’re in unfamiliar territory – so allow us to get you prepared while you choose your far-flung locale.

Here, five things to pack in your carry-on that will help you manage your hayfever symptoms on holiday.

 Vaseline

According to the NHS, lightly tracing your nostrils with Vaseline will trap any unwanted pollen particles coming your way.

 Sunglasses

If you needed an excuse to buy those oversized shades at duty free, here it is. Opt for a larger pair to stop pollen getting into your eyes.

 Shampoo

Okay, this is a given – and the hotel will probably have those miniature bottles you use in one go – but it’s still important. Pollen can get trapped in your hair very easily, but it isn’t removed so quickly. Remember to wash your hair in the evenings before you go to sleep.

 Tea

This is a really good one. Coffee can actually enhance your hayfever symptoms, so trade in your espresso for a cup of chamomile tea. It’s not only a natural antihistamine, but an anti-inflammatory as well. If you’re not a fan – don’t panic. After you’ve dipped the tea bags in boiling water, leave them to cool then place them over your eyes instead.

 Vitamin C

It’s not the most exciting extra to throw into your bag, but you’ll be glad you did. Citrus fruits contain bioflavonoids (try saying that out loud) which are known for their anti-allergy properties. You can thank us later.
