Get Smart: Introducing the Intelligent Inhaler That Syncs to Your Phone

You’ve heard of smartphones (you’re probably reading this on one, actually) and you’re aware of smart homes – (the houses that understand you when you talk to them). Now, there’s a new recruit to the army of genius gadgets – the smart inhaler.

While the new-and-improved inhaler is already available in various forms, many will still be relying on its older, more traditional counterpart. Designed to distribute medication quickly and easily, the clever inhaler also boasts a number of other add-ons – from the ability to track usage to issuing warnings of imminent asthma attacks.

In a conversation with WebMD, Joseph Clift, senior policy officer at Asthma UK, said “smart inhalers essentially contain sensors that attach to existing inhalers and record when somebody's medication is taken.” Explaining how the innovative inhaler works, Mr. Clift revealed that the devices are typically Bluetooth enabled. “They can be paired wirelessly with a smart device that the individual will own, like a smartphone or a tablet, or with their computer at home," he continued.

It’s thought that the inhaler will improve the user’s quality of life in a number of ways. The new technology will give asthma sufferers an insight into their condition, and reveal if they are taking their medicine correctly. Watch this space – we certainly are.
