Coconut Oil: The Miracle or the Myth?

Not too long ago, I was scrolling through my Instagram feed when I came across an image that read the following:

“Frizzy hair? Coconut oil. No shaving cream? Coconut oil? Dry skin? Coconut oil. Relationship problems? Coconut oil.”

Once I stopped laughing, I actually thought about the jar of white stuff in my kitchen cupboard. I can’t comment on its ability to solve relationship issues, but I can definitely talk about the other interesting claims made by a random Instagrammer I follow.

Here are five reasons my jar of coconut oil is almost empty.

 Hair hydrater

Trade in your conditioner for a small amount of coconut oil, or a spritz of coconut water. The difference will seem immediate – your hair will be shinier, softer and hydrated. Bye bye breakage.

 Teeth whitener

Did you know you can use coconut oil to whiten your teeth? It’s known as oil pulling. Simply place a spoonful of the see-through substance in your mouth, and swish the liquid around your mouth for a few minutes – the longer the better. Try to avoid swallowing any, and dispose of in a plastic bag.

 Skin softener

If you’re complexion is especially dry, you can apply small amounts of coconut oil directly to your skin to deliver instant moisture – you’re welcome.

 Makeup remover

Coconut oil is a natural makeup remover. Simply massage the oil into your skin, and watch your makeup melt away. You might require a few cotton pads.

 Coffee creamer

Coconut oil makes for a healthy alternative to cream for your coffee. A spoon of coconut oil will give you a boost of energy, not just a delicious cup of coffee.
