New Augmented Reality System to Aid Medical Professionals

The medical and technology fields are advancing all the time, so innovative new methods and techniques come as no surprise. However, every now and then something pioneering lands in our inboxes or flashes up on our smart TVs. This is one of those instances.

A number of academics at Birmingham City University are developing a new platform that’s set to change the way practitioners handle and analyze patient information for good. Researchers at the institute’s Digital Media Technology lab are working on a revolutionary system that allows medical professionals to interact with data and virtual models like never before.

Using simple hand movements, the practitioner will be able to both trace and manipulate information in order to showcase an image that reflects real patient data. This new technique will be advantageous for an array of reasons - from detecting medical issues to revealing the damage caused by harmful substances like drugs and alcohol.

In a statement published on the Birmingham City University website, Dr. Ian Williams commented on the benefits set to come about as a result of this concept. “We are developing this system as a platform to allow medical professionals to interact with genuine patient data and manipulate it by hand to educate and inform patients,” he said. “There al advantages this brings are being able to visually demonstrate parts of the anatomy, using virtual models which can be customized for each patient and show how they have been impacted by lifestyle choices or how they may be changed following treatments or surgery,” he continued.
